i am done “proving” myself
My favorite time of the day has always been dusk…when the sun’s barely set and all the crows silently soar to their roosting spot for the night.
The last time I visited my cousin, he took me to this rooftop bar - and at this time, he was unaware of my obsession with crows. When we parked, I noticed there were crows everywhere. We happened to be right under the set of trees where the crows camped out for the night. Their roosting spot. I mean…a DREAM.
Every morning, I sit outside on my (new) patio with my cute kitten (Otis). We burn sage, enjoy the cool morning air, and sip hot water with lemon and honey. From here, we can see the moon (another dream). And even cooler, we watch the crows as they fly in for the day. Ready for their work assignments in the city. All of them nose diving, playing, cawing.
Crows can symbolize death to some people. I guess because of their dark hues, maybe because they were featured in the movie The Birds. For me, crows symbolize family, community, and asking for help when you need it. Have you ever witnessed this with crows? When a crow is alone and distressed, he just lets out a couple “caws” and within seconds, a pack (or a “murder” if you will) of crows shows up to help. It’s honestly the coolest thing and a beautiful example for us humans. And how often do you see a crow by itself? Very rarely. They are typically always in a group, or at the least, in a group of three (mama, papa, and baby). They protect one another, always have each other's backs, and they even mourn their dead. Community to the core.
During my last year in San Diego, I had a perfect view of the canyon and would watch the crows (and hawks, obvi) religiously. And I really do think I learned so much from them about family, about community, and how important that is. And now…I’m reunited with my family. I let out a few “caws” and my family was right there, happy to support, with an entire welcoming committee when I arrived. I used to be someone who took pride in being so independent, in knowing that I didn’t need anyone to help me - “I can do this all on my own”. And now, I am loving the help, loving the support, and asking for help has become something of a necessity in my life. I am done “proving” myself. And ready to receive the love and support that’s been waiting here for me the last 20 years.
Crows have quickly become one of my favorite animals. And thanks to them, I now have two favorite times of the day.
